Chapter 4: Emi
Emily day’s begun filled to the brim with stress. The heir would arrive today and as the student council secretary she needed to make sure everything was correct. She combed her dark hair whistled she exited her room. She pinched the side of her dress as she jogged towards the elevator. Going outside she hoped on a golf cart and rushed to meet the president.
Driving through the academy amazed her. This Island might as well have been its own country. Students, as with most teaching institution, vastly outnumbered teachers. However, in order to maintain the academy students served as the primary labor force. Student were required to work for at least three hours a day. This for most students, were their first job experience.
Thankfully due to her aptitude in magic she was noticed by the student council. The president then hired her for the secretary position. The position did have its perks, one being the golf cart. Stopping at crosswalk she waved at passing students. Pressing the pedal the cart resumed its monotonous hum.
President Taylor working was bliss. She always seem so calm, gentle yet motivated enough to hit goals. Her temperament differed from that lethargic Principal. Anyway President Taylor’s story was well known. While in vacation in South America the Principal adopted her. Emily, along with majority of the school, was happy President Taylor didn’t inherit anything from the Principal. His looks wasn’t too bad she mused.
As she parked her golf cart. She entered the beige building. The square building had a glass ceiling which illuminated it. Floor to ceiling windows lined the lobby. It’s vividly colored orange walls seemed to glow. Assortments of lime green, sky blue, and yellow couches decorated the lobby. Ignoring all of this Emi powered to the glass elevator. Going to the third floor she marched to the conference room. Remembering something important she placed a bracelet on her wrist. Placing her bracelet near the handle the door opened slightly. Pushing the door open to a large conference room.
“Sorry I’m late,” she apologized shutting the door behind her. A long rectangular table stood in the middle of the room. Various students sat on either side. At the helm was the President.
“No worries,” President Taylor spoke. “This meeting is only for revision purposes. Everyone should know their roles by now. Remember, the person we are receiving is part of the family who made all of this possible. Don’t mess it up.”
The others left the room Emi stayed alone with President Taylor. “Emi make sure everything is set up for the banquet tonight.” As she always had done with such important matters. President Taylor reviewed every meticulous details.
Half-an-hour later she left the conference room. For the rest of the morning, she handled the last minutes mishaps. With a stressful morning done she calmly walked to her next task. In the corner of her eyes she caught a blur. Next thing she knew she woke up with a severe migraine.
“Are you okay?” A smoky voice asked her.
Rubbing her temple she shook her head. “For the most part.” She looked at the voice and locked eyes with captivating blue eyes. The small woman in front of her had long lush blonde hair. Her tiny body looked like it had never lifted a single thing her whole life. The stranger looked as if someone gave breath to a doll.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention,” she apologized.
Emi blinked awaken from her trance. “I wasn’t paying attention anyway,” she added diffusing the situation. “It’s partially my fault.”
About to go on her way she stood up and patted her dress. “Hope to see you around,” Emi told her. Taking a good look Emi saw her fidget uncomfortably. Thinking nothing of it she asked, “Do you need help?”
The girl shook her head, “It’s my first time here and I’m lost.”
Emi realized she may have been a transfer. Another problem added to this day. “Follow me. First show me your bracelet?”
Cocking her head sideways in confusion, “What bracelet,” the girl replied. Turns out this would a huge pain. Needing to finish an errand in this area Emi made her decision.
“Come with me anyway,” she sighed. “My names Emi.”
Nodding the girl repeated Emi softly multiple times. As Emi looked at her method strangely the girl presented herself, “I’m Ash pleasure to meet you, Emi.”
Completely weirded out by this whole situation she brought Ash with her on her next errand. She continued her stroll until with Ash in tow entering a more boisterous part of the academy. This seemed like downtown. Shops, restaurants, and businesses occupied the area. Ignoring all of these Emi stopped in front of a bakery. Ash cut in front of her before she could enter. The sight of sweets seemed to have peeked her interest.
She darted towards the counter. Her hand pressed against the glass. She looked at the various desserts made by the store. Emi grinned, seeing her react like a child was cute. It seemed Ash had found something which far outstripped the rest. A marvelous three layered cake. Just as President Taylor had wanted. A chocolate cake decorated by vanilla icing. On top was written “Welcome to the Academy.”
Emi explained, “This cake is for the Exodia heir, who’s supposed to come here today. Stay here. I’ll be right back,” she told Ash before heading to the door behind the counter. Walking down the narrow hallway she met an elderly couple sitting and enjoying a cup of tea. The man talk had a full set of white hair. As natural with age he accrued some weight. Although quiet he possessed a gentle smile which welcomed all. His wife was similar, equally calm and nurturing. Her greying pixie cut hair suited her. She seemed to have done a better job combating the weight gain.
Coming to this bakery always provided peace to Emi. Mike and Audrey, the couple, would listen to her problems and offer counseling when necessary. Besides this place sold the best desserts on the island. Being able to get a discount she frequented the place quite often.
“Hey Emi, the cake’s done,” Mike spoke.
She grinned, “I saw it looks wonderful. I’m pretty sure the President will approve. Oh by the way I brought a new student here you guys don’t have any food for her by any chance. When we she saw the cake she looked like she might actually devour it.
“Oh yes sweetie bring her here. We’ll make something for her,” Audrey stood up. Tossing Mike an apron she turned on the stove.
“Thanks I’ll be right back,” Emi went back to get Ash. Only to find a surreal sight.
